Instead of plain water use compost “tea” to water AND fertilize your marijuana plants
I purchased this compost tumbler, the Hot Frog Rolling Composter from Amazon after looking at and comparing what felt like thousands of them! No kiddin!
I had already started a compost heap months before and wanted to simplify how I had been doing it up to now.
I had certain characteristics in mind: it had to be old guy friendly meaning easy to roll, load and open all with no assembly required just for beginners. I needed to feel it was solid and would last.

Adding this Hot Frog tumbler to my garden is just one component of my master plan for using finished organic compost to both water and feed my marijuana plants and a few other plants such as tomatoes and lettuce. I hope with experimentation I am able to develop a nutrient rich, oxygenated “tea” recipe that when “brewed” with my water supply (well) by placing a determined amount (2 lbs) in a nut milk bag then letting it soak in the water tank like a giant tea bag in a ginorous cup!
I am confident that brewed compost tea will provide excellent nutrition to my indoor grow, my garden and houseplants and my tumbler will provide it.
Up to now my composting has been the pitchfork, pile and wheelbarrow method back in my south 40, not very convenient. I could never find a better place to put it in the yard where it was least offensive, minimized odor and kept the flies away. Using The Hot Frog Compost Tumbler solves all of these issues and looks good doing it!
Use completely organic milk nut bags to hold your finished compost
For my compost I wanted to make the whole process easier and cleaner from the beginning, following a plan I have devised to make batches of fully composted materials that will be stuffed into nut milk bags, then inserted (hung by drawstring) into 30 gal water tank and aerated with an air pump. Fully “brewed” tea will then be pumped out of the water tank via a submersible water pump to an adjustable watering nozzle. You achieve watering and fertilizing with one step.
This Hot Frog compost tumbler is less labor intensive than the pile method, it more easily controls insects and odor than any other composting methods. What I like about it: It comes fully assembled, the tumbler itself and a base to sit it on. This is very important for a guy like me, 69 going on 80! Most of the reviews of tumblers requiring “some” assembly were not too encouraging, ie, making it pretty clear they were a pain to put together.
#2 It’s made entirely of recycled plastic. It’s very stout yet turns easily by hand with a full load of cooking veggies.
#3 the cost was reasonable, shipping was free and I could easily imagine how it would work for my application. At 37 gallon capacity it may seem small to the big garden clubbers but for me it’s perfect!
I built a solid wood base that supports a fully loaded tumbler, raised it up 16 inches off the ground to make it easier to load, unload and turn.
All in all I am very happy with this addition to the overall grow plan, a key component to making a nutritious, oxygenated compost tea for my marijuana grow and fertilizer for my garden. I will add another tumbler which will be assigned “cooking” duties only, meaning no fresh compost materials will be added during the cooking/turning process. I would be interested to see what my readers are doing with their compost, maybe share a “tea” formula for watering marijuana plants, who knows?
